Hemsworth Architecture created a 2700-square-meter industrial facility for Leon Lebeniste Fine Furnishings & Architectural Woodworking in the region near Vancouver in 2021. The studio had the goal of creating an industrial structure that complements the natural surroundings. The nearly rectangular building is constructed with glulam beam columns and posts supporting CLT mass timber panels, combined with concrete slabs for the floors and roof. The mass timber structure was left exposed in some locations and is clad with plywood sheathing in others to create a warm atmosphere. The wood throughout the project was sourced from sustainability-focused producers in British Columbia and reduces the embodied carbon in the project compared to other local industrial buildings. Another fact about this construction: Wood construction also allows for seismic resilience.
